Proper planting and care of rhododendron Daurian (wild rosemary)

Dahurian rhododendron can be found in Primorsky Krai, Eastern Siberia and Northern Mongolia, as well as in such eastern countries as China and Korea. The plant prefers coniferous forests and rocks. This is a fairly large shrub that can reach four meters in height. It is strongly branched, and its thick shoots are directed upwards. The leaves are leathery, smooth on top, and scaly on the reverse side. In young plants they are light green in color, but over time they begin to darken. Flowering takes place before the appearance of the leaves and lasts only three weeks.

Before talking about the peculiarities of growing Daurian rhododendron, the species description should also be considered.

Rhododendrons are shrub plants. Among them are annual, biennial and perennial representatives, which differ in the shape and shade of leaves, flowers and even shoots. In general, this representative of the Heather family has gained its popularity around the world due to not only decorative leaves. One of the main advantages of the plant - beautiful flowers that can be painted in a variety of shades. Flowers may vary in shape depending on the species. Some of them even have a certain aroma.

After flowering, rhododendron produces fruits that look like a five-leaf box, and seeds of no more than two millimeters in size are stored in it. As for the root system, then, despite the rather impressive size of the bush, it is considered compact. It is located very close to the ground, which greatly simplifies the transplanting process, not only for the gardener, but also for the shrubbery itself.

Daurian rhododendron in the Red Book is listed as a rare and unique species that needs protection.

When and where to plant

Considering our climate, only varieties that easily tolerate winter can be selected for planting. Dahurian rhododendron is a winter-hardy species and can grow in the gardens of Russia. The most appropriate time for planting seedlings is the period from April to May and from September to November. Although it is possible to transplant a plant or plant young shrubs at any time while the growing season lasts. The ban on transplantation is established only during flowering and the next few weeks after its completion.

As for the landing site, it should be a shady area, better on the north side of the house or another building. The soil should be acidic, rich in humus and fairly well drained. As already mentioned, this plant chooses coniferous forests, which is why it is possible to locate pine, larch or oak in the neighborhood. Do not plant rhododendron near those plants whose root system has the same horizontally oriented (surface) arrangement. Between them there will be a struggle for nutrients, and flowering shrubs will suffer greatly. If you are sure that such neighbors cannot be avoided, then you are faced with another task - to protect the roots of rhododendron. To do this, between plants dig in slate or other artificial obstacle.

Landing technology

The gardener must prepare a planting well in advance of a depth of 40 centimeters and a diameter of 60. Inside, a specially prepared mixture is placed, which includes:

  • High peat - 8 buckets.
  • Loam - 3.5 buckets (in its absence, it is easily replaced by two buckets of ordinary clay).

At the bottom of the pit, the mixture should be well compacted and a recess should be made that would be the same size as the earthen coma where the roots are. Before diving, a sapling of Daurian rhododendron should be lowered into the water and kept there until air bubbles stop rising from the water. After that, you can safely lower the roots into the hole, then you need to well fill them with substrate and tamp them so that there are no voids left.

The surface of the site and the root neck should be on the same level. After planting, you must immediately water the plant well. Calculate the liquid so that the soil is exactly wet by twenty centimeters. When water is completely absorbed, mulching is necessary. To do this, you can use moss, peat, oak leaves or pine needles, wood chips.

Pay attention to the number of flower buds. If there are too many of them, then it is better to remove some. This will contribute to better rooting. If the rhododendron is in an open area without neighbors, then it is better to put a strong support near the young seedling. And after a successful rooting, you can immediately remove it.

Growing up

One of the most spectacular garden shrubs is rhododendron. Planting and caring for them will not cause difficulties even for a novice gardener, but the result of cultivation can exceed all expectations.

Plant care consists of a classic scheme of watering, pruning, weeding, fertilizing. The only rule that a beginning gardener should remember is that the soil around the plant needs to be loosened very carefully and not deeply. This is due to the fact that the roots are located too close to the surface of the earth, which means that during loosening they can be accidentally damaged. In this connection, it is recommended to remove weeds only by hands, without using garden tools.

During the period of bud formation and flowering, rhododendron needs moisture and not only soil, but also atmospheric. From the correct irrigation depends not only the flowering of this year, but also the budding of the buds for the next. For watering need to use soft water. It is better if you can collect rainwater, but in case of its absence, pre-set the liquid to stand up. If you did not have time to do this, then at least a day before the intended irrigation add several full handfuls of high-moor peat to the water. This will not only soften it, but also make it more acidic.

Observe the condition of the leaves, this is how you can determine the required frequency of watering. Leaves that lack moisture become dull and lose turgor. As with the first watering, the soil should be wetted at least twenty centimeters deep. A gardener should feel boundaries, as excessive moisture causes the leaves to start rolling and fading. In order not to get confused, try in any weather to spray the leaves with the same soft water.

In the case of rhododendron, planting and care are fairly simple. One of the important stages of growing this shrub - pruning. However, this procedure for thinning is not necessary. Since the nature of this plant is such that it itself forms the correct form of the crown. It is only necessary to remove the shoots that have been frostbitten in winter, dried up, or broken. With the help of trimming you can control the height of the bush.

Pruning shoots can only be in the spring, before the process of sap flow has begun. If you cut the shoots, the thickness of which is more than two centimeters, then the place of the cut must be treated with garden pitch to prevent infection.

Rhododendron has one feature that not everyone likes. If in one year its flowering and fruiting were abundant, then next year such beauty cannot be expected. What to do with it? You just need to trim the old inflorescences, so that the bush could send all its forces to the formation of buds for the next year.

Rhododendrons are in dire need of fertilizer. Even those specimens that were planted in the current year. As a fertilizer is best suited liquid feed from cow dung or horn flour. The first top dressing should be introduced at the beginning of spring, and the last one should be identified at the end of July, when the flowering stops and the young shoots begin their active growth.

Manure and water are mixed in a ratio of 1:15, and then this mixture is left for a day to make it true. Only after this time is it ready for use. Do not forget to irrigate the plant well before applying the fertilizer. Complex mineral preparations are selected in accordance with the type of soil. The working solution is prepared strictly following the instructions on the package.

Diseases and pests

There are a number of pests that are very annoying to rhododendrons, among them:

  • snails,
  • slugs
  • scythes,
  • spider mites,
  • weevils,
  • bed bugs
  • rhododendron flies,
  • mealybugs.

With Daurian rhododendron, pests that belong to the mollusk family can be removed manually. But the rest of the war can declare an 8 percent solution of the fungicide TMTD. Such a tool as diazinon is very effective against spider mites, weevils and rhododendron bugs. Remember that when dealing with weevils with a special tool, not only the shrub itself is treated, but also the top layer of soil around it.

The most common diseases of Daurian rhododendron are rust, cancer, leaf spot and chlorosis. Almost all of them are due to poor aeration of the root system. Bordeaux liquid is a good tool in the fight against rust and spotting. In case of manifestation of chlorosis, when the leaves of the plant begin to turn yellow, iron chelate is added to the water for irrigation. Cancer is removed only with the affected shoots, cutting them to a healthy place. For prophylaxis, it is recommended to spray the bush with Bordeaux liquid twice a year: in early spring and autumn.

The reproduction of Daurian rhododendron can be done in two ways: by seeds or by any known vegetative methods. The simplest is reproduction by layering.

In the spring, choose the lower shoot, which is very flexible and preferably quite long. It needs to be slightly bent above the ground and placed in a hole prepared in advance (at least fifteen centimeters deep). Top escape to sprinkle with garden soil mixed with peat, and in the ditch itself pin it with a metal rod so that it could not rise.

The remaining tip should be tied to a peg. Layers need to be moistened simultaneously with the general bush. In this position, it is until next spring, or even until autumn. When the layers are already well rooted, it is necessary to separate it from the mother bush and transplant it to a permanent place in the hole prepared in advance, as described above.

Generative reproduction

Seeds are planted in containers prepared in advance, where heather or peat land with a small amount of sand should be located. On top of them only lightly sprinkled with well-washed sand and cover the container with glass to create a greenhouse effect. Sprouting takes place in a well-lit room.

Care is that, as necessary, you need to moisten the soil (it is better to use a spray bottle for this), ventilate and remove condensate from the glass daily. Within a month, the first shoots should appear. And when there are two true leaves, it is necessary to plant seedlings in different pots.

In the first year, seedlings should be in a cool bright greenhouse. And already next spring they can be safely planted on training beds. Pre-prepared soil should consist of garden soil and a small amount of sand. The growth of seedlings is extremely slow, and the first flowers can be observed only after six, and maybe even eight years.

After flowering

After completion of flowering and in the autumn period, make sure that the soil does not dry out. In the dry autumn spend abundant watering. If nature indulges in rains, then this is not worth doing. With the onset of November, it is necessary to insulate the root system using a dense layer of peat.

Residents of the middle band with the onset of the first frost between the branches of the bush place the sprigs of coniferous plants and cover the bush with sacking for the winter, pulling the rope to prevent the crown from breaking up. In the spring, with the onset of a thaw, this shelter is removed. In the more southern areas of the country such shelter is not required.

When and how to plant

Cut the twigs and plant. It is done this way: In winter, place the branch in a vase with warm water and wait for new shoots to appear during the week. Then create the necessary conditions and properly care.

First, prepare the pit, filling with prepared mixture of soil and peat, and fill it with a compote of pine needles and sand. Make a drainage depth of 15 cm laying on the bottom of the pit pebbles, broken bricks, mixing with sand.

When planting plants follow to root neck remained above ground.

After planting, pour water abundantly. The top layer of earth covered with peat, chopped needles, pines and or sawdust.

The first flowering begins at 5-6 year. To extend flowering, remove buds that have flowered.

Rhododendron bloom in the wild

Soil requirement

Annually or next year fertilize the land. To do this, take the compost and peat, one bucket and mix it up to pour it under a bush, onto the forest region.

Composition of soil with high acidity and with the presence of nutrients and air permeability.

Eliminate stagnant water in the ground. Rhododendron root does not like loamy soil.

Place for planting and care

Better if planting place shaded and not exposed to strong wind.

The ornamental shrub requires uncomplicated care. It is important to fertilize, water and periodically remove weeds.

So, as the root is located close to the surface of the earth, carefully loosen the soil.

Rhododendron is growing, slowly, but different longevity. The first flowers appear when the plant is three or five years old, after being planted in the ground.

Ledum leaves dumps all old leaves before spring

In winter, rhododendron at rest and sheds leaves. In the crust, the juice movement stops. Maintains frost up to 45 degrees. If higher, it is necessary to protect the bush, wrapping pine and spruce branches.

Young tree is better to keep in the greenhouse, covered with dry foliage of oak.

Rhododendron need watering once every two or three weekswhen drought and intense heat. The water is not chlorinated and not hard. It is better to use rainwater.

It is advisable to pour two buckets of water. To soften, add vinegar or citric acid, and leave to infuse.

Planting a plant

Experienced gardeners breed rhododendron cuttings or seeds. Landing to do in March or September.

Dig a young bush that has not bloomed. After collecting seeds, store in a closed jar for three years before planting. Sow in February or early March. Sprinkle on the ground and cover with a mixture of sand, peat. From above, pour rain or acidified water.

Seedlings cover with glass or film to keep moisture. Temperature 20 degrees. In a month, shoots will appear.

Fertilizer and pruning

Reproduction by cuttings from a bush is done in the middle of summer. Strong shoots of 50 centimeters long are cut. On the cuttings, remove the leaves so that only two or three are left at the top.

Accelerates rooting cuttings landing with a tilt of 30 degrees. This will require a box and a substrate, instead of peat sawdust or add perlite. Moisten the cuttings and cover with glass or film. Put the box indoors at 24 degrees. Do not forget to water.

After a half to two months, plant in pots and move to a cool place.
In spring, transplant the plant into the open ground and leave it there, at this place for 1 year.

Rhododendron application and function

Bushes Daurskogo rhododendron becomes an ornament of gardens and parks. Therefore used in the design of landscape design.

Already two centuries decorate Russian gardens. Popularity in the beauty of flowering.

Looks good in a group of other plants, such as: Japanese quince, barberry lilac. It grows in the shade, is not attacked by pests.

Can do it in the rose garden. In this case, the shrub reaches a height of two meters and also blooms profusely.

Plant in home gardens rhododendron Daursky and enjoy the beauty of the shrub. The recommendations described in this article will help to do this correctly.

Features of rhododendron

In the past, part of the territory of Transbaikalia was inhabited by the Dauri, and the Russians called this land Daur. It was there that a beautiful flowering shrub was seen, which subsequently received the appropriate name.

The habitat of the Daurian rhododendron is quite extensive - this is practically the whole of East Asia. Shrubs grow apart or form thickets in forests, on stony slopes and rocks. In the area of Eastern Siberia, one can find huge areas occupied by it, which during flowering fascinate with the appearance of a solid pink carpet.

The Daurian rhododendron has a very interesting feature: it can both completely drop the leaves and remain evergreen. It depends on the climatic conditions of the habitat of the plant.

Council In early spring, on the eve of any celebration, you can cut a few sprigs of wild rosemary and put them in a vase with water. After 7-8 days you get a beautiful, blooming bouquet.

Plant description

  • Shrub height from 0.5 to 2 m.
  • Branches are branched. Grow up. Each plant usually has 20-40 pieces.
  • The leaves are small, oval, with a glossy surface. Petioles are very short, they are almost imperceptible.
  • Buds are formed at the extreme leaves of the shoots. Their diameter is 2.0-4.0 cm.
  • Rhododendron Dahuri blooms from late April to June, depending on the climatic conditions of growth.
  • Fruit - oblong, rounded box.
  • The plant is frost resistant. Carries frost down to -45 ° C. Frequent thaws in the winter can ruin rhododendron.
  • The life span of a shrub is about 50 years.

How to plant a shrub in your own garden

Place for planting is desirable to choose in the penumbra. Preferably on the north side of the plot. Also, it must be protected from wind.

The soil should be acidic and loose. A good option is ready-made soil, the main component of which is peat. Be sure to arrange a good drainage.

The best time to plant is spring. In the prepared hole, not less than 50 x 50 cm in size, lay out the drainage and fill up the ground. After planting, the soil around the plant is rammed, and for convenience of irrigation and dressing, a trunk hole is formed, which is covered with mulch.

Proper care

There is nothing difficult in the care of Daurian rhododendron. Main works here:

Pruning shoots should not be carried out. This can greatly slow down the growth of the bush.

In the first three years after planting is not desirable to allow flowering. All appearing during this period is better to remove the buds. This technique will allow the plant to develop a powerful root system, which in the future will have a positive effect on flowering.
Be sure to pour plenty of rhododendron before leaving for the winter. The rest of the time, this is done only during a long period of lack of rain. Tap water or taken from a well before irrigation must be acidified with peat, citric acid, etc. Feed the plant should be every 2-3 years. At the same time, fertilizers that can alkalize the soil should be avoided.

It is possible to propagate a shrub in two ways:

The second method is considered to be more reliable (more than 85% of cuttings germinate), therefore it is more often used by gardeners.
Although Dahuri rhododendron is highly resistant to frost, young plants need shelter for the winter. For this, spruce fir twigs or dry oak leaves, which low bushes completely fill up, are suitable.

Lovers reviews

Those who have been growing wild rosemary for several years have noticed its unpretentiousness compared to other rhododendron representatives. Gardeners emphasize the need for fertilizing with special fertilizers and irrigation with acidified water. It is recommended to make inquiries about the level of groundwater, at close location of which the shrub can wither.

Not many people decide to have a beautiful plant in their garden. This is due to his slightly capricious temper. However, if you follow the guidelines for growing and care, you can get a chic bush-like bush, which can be admired every spring with long blooming.

  • has strong ethereal properties,
  • some nations use petals to make various snacks and salads.

Subort: description and photo

The Daurian rhododendron has its own sub-varieties., the most interesting of them are described below, and also photos of flowers are shown.

Ledumberry - common in the Far East and in the south of Eastern Siberia, loves to grow under the shade of larches, the flowers are bright pink or purple.

April jam

April Jam is a wonderful shrub with large white terry flowers in color, it has good winter hardiness, usually reaches a height of 1 - 1.5 m, it blooms for two months.

The peculiarity of flowering of Daurian rhododendron is that it begins earlier than in all other species - from the beginning of April. The flowering is very abundant, at this time you can not see even branches - the whole bush consists of bright hats of flowers, they bloom at the tips of the branches.

  • Care before and after flowering - this shrub grows rather slowly and blooms about five years after planting, you should always take care of the shrubs, observing all the rules for care, and after flowering you must trim.
  • What to do if it does not bloom - if the plant does not want to bloom, the landing site is most likely chosen incorrectly, transplant it.

Step-by-step care instructions

Let's take a closer look at all the main points of Rhododendron care:

  • Choosing a landing site - the place for it needs light or in a light shade, it is impossible to plant it in a lowland where water stagnation is possible.
  • What should be the soil - slightly acidic or peaty soil will be ideal, but fertile garden soil will do, only good drainage is necessary, shrubs will not be able to grow in heavy clay soil.
  • Landing - you need to plant a shrub in spring, but it’s better to prepare a landing pit for it from autumn or at least a month before planting, the pit should be at least 70 cm deep and at least half a meter wide, we add a substrate to it, which is composed of: peat, compost, sand, leaf earth, humus and coniferous litter.

  1. we pour drainage from broken brick or crushed stone to the bottom),
  2. bury the seedling, ensuring that the growing point is not underground,
  3. then we form a near-well hole, water it and immediately mulch (bark or pine sawdust).
  • Temperature - the minimum temperature that this species is able to withstand is 40 degrees of frost, the maximum is approximately 35 degrees, the most optimal is considered to be in the range from 10 degrees of frost to 20 degrees heat.
  • Watering - it is required only in summer heat, during this period it is necessary to water the plant 1 or 2 times a week, and each watering should consist of two buckets of water, the water should be rainwater or softened tap water, and the shrub must be watered before the onset of frost, this will provide him a good winter.

We must not forget that the shrub loves the humidity of the air, so frequent spraying will only benefit (just do not splash on the flowers). Top dressing - first, it is necessary annually (in spring) to add a bucket of peat and a compost bucket to each bush, also during the flowering period it will be necessary to additionally water it with a solution: dissolve 1 tablespoon of urea and the same amount of potassium sulfate in a bucket of water, 3 liters.

After flowering, it is necessary to water the shrub with this solution: in a bucket of water, dissolve one tablespoonful of superphosphate and potassium sulfate; 5 liters are required for one bush.

  • Pruning - do not abuse pruning, you only need to remove all faded brushes so that they do not interfere with further growth and do not spoil the decorativeness of the bush, in the fall you can shorten all the shoots by 25 - 30 cm for stronger bushiness.
  • Transfer - it is necessary to do transplanting only as a last resort, Rhododendron does not like to be disturbed, it is better to immediately choose a suitable place for it, but if there is no way out, then you need to replant the bush in the spring, very carefully dig it out, trying not to disturb the root system and transfer it to the prepared one landing pit.
  • How to multiply?

In the spring, a lateral shoot (several can be taken at once) is buried in the ground - into the hole to a depth of about 10 cm, this place needs to be fixed with a pin and constantly keep it wet.

Next spring you can already separate and plant a young bush separately. Cuttings and seeds multiply much more troublesomeThis is usually done by professionals.

We can safely say that Daurian rhododendron has a strong Siberian character, resistant and sustained. This is a hardy and very cheerful plant, copes with various negative weather surprises. All you need is to help him a little, to take care and in return you will receive your “Purple Sea” as a gift - an incomparable blooming beauty. Here is a sign of spring!

Daurian rhododendron: planting, care, reviews, description, photo

Daurian rhododendron is a bright representative of the heather family, which is also called wild rosemary. Photos of flowering shrubs, their detailed description and reviews of growing in amateur gardens will help you to add your own opinion about this amazing plant.

Daurian rhododendron - a symbol of victory over the winter

    Daurian rhododendron in the wild

This is how spring looks in Dauria, a historical territory in the Trans-Baikal Territory.

If in the middle zone of our Russia we are accustomed to seeing snow-white gardens with occasional patches of lilacs, then residents of the Transbaikal and Primorsky Krai, northern China and Mongolia often associate this pale-violet hue with spring, which gives Daurian rhododendron during flowering.

In addition to these areas, this plant is widely distributed in Eastern Siberia, Sakhalin, Japan and North Korea.

Began to conquer this wild rosemary and amateur gardens of our summer residents.

The name of wild rosemary does not quite apply to this plant, although the Daurian rhododendron and the Marsh wild rosemary belong to the same heather family.

    Biological description

Daurian rhododendron is a shrub of the heather family. It reaches a height of four meters, but its usual height does not exceed the two-meter mark. The bush is strongly branchy, the crown of its rather sprawling, which gives the rhododendron - the rose tree - a special decorative effect.

Leathery oval leaves up to five in length and up to three centimeters wide. In spring, they are of a delicate green color, bloom after flowering, by the autumn they get a brownish tint. Part of the leaves of rhododendron Daurian does not have time to reset, and so with them and leaves in the winter.

Depending on the growing region, the bloom of wild rosemary is stretched from mid-April to the end of May. Basically, the color of its petals from pink to purple, but in this photo you see a variety of Daurian rhododendron with white flowers.

It is quite natural that with the introduction of the plant into cultivation, the breeders developed many varieties of rosewood, differing in many factors. Below we give the most popular ones.

    • April supremacy (April reign) - double pink flowers, the variety blooms before others. The bush is low, about one meter.
    • April snow (April snow) - a sort of white, whose picture we placed above. Also very early flowering.

The following varieties refer to the so-called Rhododendron P.J.M. Group, which the American Edmund Mezitt derived, crossing the Daursky rhododendron with the Karolinsky rhododendron.

    • Elite (Elite) - tall, over four meters with beautiful large flowers.
    • Northern Starburst (Northern Starburst) - Ledum with a compact crown and large flowers.
    • Chess (Chekmate) is a dwarf variety of rhododendron with a maximum declared height of 240 centimeters. In fact, after 10 years, its growth slightly exceeds 100-120 centimeters.

Some other rhododendron varieties are worth mentioning:

    • P. J. Mezitt,
    • P.J.M. Compact Form,
    • P.J.M. Lavender
    • P.J.M. Princess Susan,
    • Regal
    • Victor.

Placement of Daurian rhododendron at the site

In its historic homeland, Dauria, rhododendron often grows understory in mixed forests, so it can tolerate some shading.

Daurian rhododendron - undergrowth in a mixed forest

Especially well combined with his landing with conifers, to which he was accustomed in the wild.

But he also respects the sunny glades, so choosing a place in this regard does not pose a big problem for the gardener.

Ledum and placed in the distant shadows of trees, and along fences and other fences.

The only thing that do not like rhododendrons - heavy wet clay soils. Therefore, if the soil in your area is clayey, and even with a high level of groundwater, it makes sense to fill special mounds for planting wild rosemary to raise its roots above groundwater.

Prefers this plant slightly acidic forest leaf or peat soil. It is worth considering when planting and caring for Daurian rhododendron.

    Planting bushes

To buy seedlings of rhododendron Daurian is currently possible in some garden stores and fruit nurseries.

Despite the price, which is quite substantial for an ornamental plant, a true lover of beauty will be able to carve out some means for its acquisition.

In addition, rhododendrons can be propagated by seed or cutting, about how to breed wild rosemary, we will write in the following chapters.

In order for a sapling purchased or grown well to take root, it should create the conditions for growth to which it is used in its natural environment. The soil should be slightly acidic with average values of pH 4.5-5.5.

This soil is typical for coniferous forests, therefore, to fill the planting pit, you need to take care of the harvesting of such soil.

The process of planting Daurian rhododendron and similar plants can be divided into the following stages.

    1. We dig a hole fifty feet deep, and seventy centimeters in diameter.
    2. At the bottom of the pit lay drainage. As it can be used broken bricks, pebbles, expanded clay. If crushed stone is available, make sure that it is granite, not calcareous, otherwise the pH value of the soil will shift to the alkaline side, and this will harm the plant.
    3. We pour into the hole such a quantity of forest land prepared by us so that the rhododendron's growth point is above the soil surface. This is exactly the case when it is not worth deeply deepening the sapling.
    4. We set up a sapling, sprinkle it and pour it abundantly until the water clears the soil and covers the roots. After that, we fall asleep to the top.
    5. Mulch planting pit pine or spruce. Also very good mulch for such plants is shredded pine bark, which can be purchased at sawmills or sawmills.

It should be noted that the distance between neighboring bushes of rhododendron during planting depends on the characteristics of the cultivated variety. So for dwarf wild rosemary this interval can be as much as seventy centimeters, whereas tall varieties require distances of two or more meters.

    Caring for wild rosemary

In principle, when the plant takes root normally, then care for it comes down to watering, which in the absence of rain is held every two weeks.

During severe droughts, plant nutrition is required, since the number of microorganisms during such periods may decrease and the plant will stop producing food from decaying mulch, the layer of which should not decrease all summer less than ten centimeters thick.

Water for irrigation should be thawed or rain. Well or spring water with the presence of lime will lead to soil leaching and plant disease.

Regardless of the fact that rhododendron Daurian is very cold-resistant, it requires shelter in a snowless winter. This is done so that the flower buds are not frozen, and the spring blooms do not become uneven.

Lap-tree or conifer needles are used for sheltering low-growing varieties, and taller plants are covered with covering material stretched over the frame.

Shelter of rhododendrons for the winter

    Root layers

In order to obtain a sapling of Daurian rhododendron root cuttings, it is necessary to perform the following measures.

    1. In the spring side shoots bend down to the ground.
    2. At a depth of 10-15 centimeters dug hole.
    3. In the hole fit escape with a developed kidney and pinned to the ground.
    4. The place of seeding is watered, and the hole is covered with soil.
    5. During the summer, the backfill site is regularly kept wet.

In the fall, the rooted shoot can be separated from the main parent plant and replanted, but it is better to let it overwinter next to an adult shrub.

The sequence of work in cutting a wild rosemary is as follows.

    1. In July, cut the green cuttings on the shoots of the current year. The length of the cuttings 5-8 centimeters. Cuttings should have 2-3 leaves, remove the rest.
    2. We place the cuttings, cut at an oblique angle, into the peat-sawdust or sandy-peat moist substrate and put in a warm, + 24-26 degrees, place under the glass.
    3. After two months, transfer the cuttings in the substrate to a place with a temperature lowered to 8-12 degrees.
    4. In the spring we plant rooted cuttings to a permanent place.

We offer to enjoy the magnificent images of the blossoming Daurian rhododendron, and at the same time listen to the song of the “Gems” group:

Proper planting and care of rhododendron Daurian (wild rosemary)

For the first time the shrub began to grow even in the ice age. Now there are reserves in which this plant is protected by law. It grows well both in natural conditions and in personal plots.

The rhododendron Dahurian plant is resistant to frost. Popular name - Rosemary, given, because of the similarity of the leaves. Botanical name appeared from the territory of Transbaikalia, where they lived - Dauri.

Daur rhododendron grows to a height of three meters. It is found in Siberia, in the Altai in Transbaikalia, as well as in China, in the territory of Manchuria, Karelia and in the Far East.

Even the first time he saw this bush want to grow in the garden. For this reason, the plant is popular in ornamental gardening.

Rhododendron unpretentious in care and easy to plant. Flowering begins in April and lasts up to 40 days. Flowers lush. The tips of the branches are decorated with umbrellas of flowers.

    Top dressing

When feeding, add mineral and organic fertilizers with obligatory nitrogen content of phosphorus and potassium. To do this in two or three years, only after flowering.

Do not exceed the dose of phosphoric acid, chlorine, lime. Do it in two or three years, only after flowering.

Experienced gardeners breed rhododendron cuttings or seeds. Landing to do in March or September.

    Cuttings of Rhododendron Seed Caps

Dig a young bush that has not bloomed. After collecting seeds, store in a closed jar for three years before planting. Sow in February or early March. Sprinkle on the ground and cover with a mixture of sand, peat. From above, pour rain or acidified water.

Seedlings cover with glass or film to keep moisture. Temperature 20 degrees. In a month, shoots will appear.

As soon as there are two or three leaves on the sprouts, remove the seedlings in a bright place at a temperature of 12 degrees. It will be hardened.

Dahurian rhododendron (wild rosemary): how to plant and care

Dahuri rhododendron is known to residents of Siberia, the Caucasus, and the Far East.

This is usually a nondescript shrub that changes when it begins to bloom, turns into a handsome man.

It becomes a fragrant bush, covered in purple flowers.

The people rhododendron often began to call wild rosemary, although they belong to the same genus of heather bushes, but still they are different plants.

General information about the plant Rhododendron Dahur

If the florist sees rhododendron in its natural habitat, he will definitely want that this shrub bloomed in his area.

The advantages include the fact that rhododendron is not whimsical in care and is popular in ornamental gardening.

If in February or March, cut a branch of rhododendron and put it in the water in a warm room, then after a week it can blossom.

Therefore, it is not difficult to grow Daurian rhododendron in a garden plot, while creating the necessary conditions for growth and proper care.

In Greek, the name of the plant sounds like a "rose tree". If the word is disassembled in parts, then we can distinguish two roots, translated as "rose" and "tree", because during flowering the rose bush is beautiful, like a rose.

Use and grow rhododendron to decorate gardens and parks began in the 17th century in England.

Two centuries later, this shrub began to appear on the backyards. Although in Japan, China, Korea, in the eastern parts of Russia, they knew about rhododendron bush for a long time and used it in oriental medicine.

As in the wild rosemary, rhododendron contains vitamins, phytoncides, fruit sugars, and essential oils. Sometimes the petals of these flowers were even used for salad, so the dish became sweeter and acquired aroma.

Because of the beauty of flowering rhododendron bushes are popular among gardeners. The shape of the flowers resemble the bells of pink, purple hue, which are collected in tassels at the ends of the branches.

In one such brush may be about twenty flowers. The leaves of rhododendron have a glossy shine, which emphasizes their beauty.

    Types of Daurian rhododendron

There are approximately 18 plant species. At the same time, three of them are the most popular in Russia, while outwardly, they differ little.

But botanists divide them into three species according to their habitat and the form of leaves.

Rhododendron spikyit grows in coniferous-deciduous forests of the Trans-Baikal Territory, Korea, Northern China, and Japan.

This type of plant has the largest leaves with pointed ends, hence the name. The seamy side of the leaves of the light green grass, closer to winter, they begin to fall off, but not completely.

Sikhotinsky rhododendron grows on acidic soils near the sea coast of Primorsky Krai.

Since the plant is endemic, it is listed in the Red Book.

This type of rhododendron leaves with a blunt end and more rigid than in other species. In winter, unlike other species, the leaves of the plant do not fall off, but the folded leaves occur along the central vein of the leaf.

When spring comes, the leaves return to their former shape and then fall off, after which new young leaves appear at the bush.

Sikhotinsky rhododendron can bloom twice a year - at the beginning of spring and if there is a warm autumn.

Daurian rhododendron grows in coniferous and deciduous forests of eastern Siberia, Mongolia, China, Korea, Japan. In height can be up to four meters.

At the same time, the branches tend upwards, at the ends there is a small edge. It has small leaves that have a dark green color on top, and a rusty or brown color with thick down on their bottom.

In winter, part of the foliage falls, part remains on the bush. Dahurian rhododendron is frost resistant, can withstand even frost at 40 degrees, and a small need for sunlight. In Canada, America, Europe, hybrid varieties are grown with this type of plant.

Such qualities of the plant as unpretentiousness and frost resistance helped the spread of rhododendron in gardening.

Rhododendron is well tolerated in a group with plants such as Ainus, sirens, barberries, wild rosemary. Besides the fact that the plant quietly tolerates a small shadow, it is resistant to pests.

I must say that rhododendron cannot be grown at home, it is not adapted to this. For home cultivation, it is better to choose azalea, it is a room flower from a genus of rhododendrons, but a small height with beautiful flowers.

The choice of location and soil

The best option for planting rhododendron would be a small shadow in a place protected from the wind.

The soil is better to choose acidic, enriched with nutrients, with drainage and good air flow.

An important condition will not allow water to stagnate in the ground, otherwise the roots will rot. For this reason, the plant is not suitable heavy soil, clay, areas where there is a number of groundwater. Peat is more suitable here.

    Pit preparation

Landing is necessary in the spring.

To begin with, a pit is prepared for planting, in depth and width not less than half a meter.

In the pit you need to pour the finished substrate silt peat, leaf soil, compost, make coniferous litter, add humus, river sand.

It is important to lay crushed stone or parts of bricks on the bottom so that there is good drainage. No need to add lime to the ground for planting, the plant does not tolerate alkaline soils.

When the seedling is instilled, it is necessary that the root of the neck is not underground, let it protrude above the ground. At the end of planting rhododendron, you need to form a pristvolnuyu hole and water the plant well.

Over the ground, a mound of mulch can be made to protect the roots near the surface. Care for shrubs is not difficult.

The main thing that is required of the gardener is regular watering, fertilizing the plants, and removing weeds.

Loosening the soil should be carried out with caution, since the roots of rhododendrons are located close to the ground.

Young rhododendron bushes do not prune the bush, otherwise development may be slowed down. The bush grows slowly, but in the future it will live and bloom for a long time, for ten years the bush will be decorative.

In order for the first few years of a shrub plant to grow well and not spend power on flowering, growers cut the buds, which are beginning to tie. And you can enjoy the beautiful flowers of rhododendron four years after planting in the soil.

Winter is the resting time for rhododendron, at this time the bush sheds leaves and the sap secretion stops. If the frost in winter exceeds forty degrees, then the plant must be protected from the cold.

In this case it is necessary to wrap a bush with spruce pine branches, for a very young rhododendron plant you can make a greenhouse for protection or sprinkle oak leaves on top.

Rhododendron needs to be watered once every two weeks, especially if it is hot and dry. Watering is carried out in the near-well hole near two buckets of non-rigid water, without chlorine. An excellent option for this would be rainwater.

If you water with tap water, you can add a little bit of acetic or citric acid, you can still half a cup of sour peat.

Water with additives should be left for a day. Before the onset of frost, you need to cut the rhododendron bush well, before the soil freezes, this will allow the plant to winter well.

Feeding of rhododendron bush should be carried out after the flowering period and in spring once every three years. In the spring you need to fertilize the plant with organic, mineral fertilizers with phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium.

When choosing fertilizers, it is necessary to pay attention to the content of lime, chlorine, and an increased proportion of phosphoric acid.

Rhododendron does not like when alkalization occurs soil.

    Dividing bush

The simplest method of reproduction of rhododendron will be digging up a young bush in nature and transplanting it in its area. This should be done in early March or September, avoiding the flowering period.

If experienced, growers can use seed and grafting. Seed propagation is usually used for wild-growing Daurian rhododendron.

Its seeds have high germination capacity, and if they are put in a jar and tightly closed, they can be stored for up to three years. Sowing of seeds usually takes place in February-March by a rash on sand-peat mixture, it is not necessary to deepen.

Required good watering rainwater or normal acidified water.

Next, the seed box must be covered with a film or glass to maintain humidity and put in a room with a temperature of 20 degrees. Within a month, shoots will appear.

And when there are three leaflets on the sprouts, the box with them should be moved to a light, but cooler room for hardening the plant and increasing endurance.

    Plant Care Rhododendron Dahur

“Beauty requires sacrifice,” is a phrase that has turned teeth on edge. But Dahuri rhododendron refutes it, every spring blooming on the hills of Transbaikalia.

Until the 17th century, part of the territory of Eastern Siberia and the land of the western Amur region were called Dauria.

One of its unofficial symbols is a shrub with delicate pink flowers.

    Habitual beauty

Buy saplings of a daursky rhododendron uneasy. For some reason it is not in the catalogs of gardening shops, and it is rarely found in retail. This shrub is completely undeserved. Flowering pink fields east of the Altai Mountains - a clear confirmation of this.

The shrub that blooms in spring (April-May) will give an elegant holiday look to the summer cottage or backyard plot. In Siberia at this time on the garden paths sometimes snow still lies. Pink flowers against the thawed land will melt the heart of even a hardened citizen cynic.

Important! In Latin, the name of the shrub sounds like Rhododendron dauricum, and it is also mistakenly called wild rosemary. Ledum and rhododendron Daurian - close relatives. Both of them belong to the heather family, but still they are different species.

    Breeding methods

In wildlife shrub propagated by seeds that are able to ascend in a few years. Amateur gardeners, one might say, “professionals” grow a plant from seeds. It is more laborious and responsible work than the vegetative method.

Seeds of rhododendron are sown in the winter months: December-February. Rhododendron begin to grow in boxes, and the seeds are not instilled.

The temperature in the room should be kept at + 18-20 degrees.

If you germinate seeds in a room, you will need to maintain soil moisture and air.

Use glass or plastic to cover seed boxes. Seeds have excellent germination - germinate up to 80%.

Moreover, it is maintained for five years, provided that the seeds are stored in an impenetrable container in a dry cool place.

Seedlings may bloom in the fifth or even third year, depending on storage conditions.

For vegetative propagation taken green cuttings or dividing shrubs. They are harvested from mid-June to July. Rooted prepared green cuttings with almost 100% guarantee.

    Characteristic differences

Planting and caring for Daurian rhododendron is simplified due to the unpretentiousness of the plant, increased frost resistance, the ability to grow in the shaded part of the garden. The name "rhododendron" historically consists of two words - "rose" and "tree". The flowering is amazing - lush hats of flowers wrap a shrub with dark green glossy leaves, so even the beauty of a rose fades before a similar extravaganza of colors. Even before blooming leaves, the bush is covered with delicate buds. The flowers are shaped like bells, and the colorful range is represented by all shades of purple-pink.

In China and Manchuria, the petals of the plant from ancient times were used by folk healers to make concoctions and teas. Flowers are rich in phytoncides, vitamins, essential oils and fruit sugars. The use of petals in cooking allows you to prepare sweetish salads with a pleasant aroma of forest greens.

    Abundance of species

Among the species diversity of rhododendrons, only three species became popular.

    Sikhotinsky rhododendron

The differences between them are insignificant, the difference lies in the shape of the leaf blade and the distribution area:

    • Spiky rhododendron has large, pointed leaves. With the onset of cold weather, the plant loses its leaves. Distributed in broad-leaved and coniferous forests in Japan and North China.
    • Sikhotinsky rhododendron - is characterized by large leaves that do not fall off by winter, but twist in the cold season along the central vein. With the advent of heat, the leaves return to their former shape, but after the growth of new foliage, last year’s leaves fly around. The flowering is usually spring, but under conditions of mild autumn it can bloom again. Thickets of rhododendron are located on the coast of Primorsky Krai.
    • Dahurian rhododendron - has small dark leaves, which from the inside out are painted in a brownish tint, the entire surface of the leaf blade is pubescent. With the onset of cold weather, some leaves fly around, others hold onto branches until spring. Erect shrub grows to four meters in height, resistant to severe frosts, can withstand shading. The plant is found in the forests of Korea, Mongolia, Siberia, China. Dahurian rhododendron served as a parental species, on the basis of which many hybrid varieties were derived, affecting flowers of various colors and shapes.

Although there are many types of plants, but none of them can grow in indoor conditions. Therefore, to engage in the cultivation of ornamental shrubs recommend that those who have the opportunity to plant rhododendron in open ground, provide a lot of space for growth.

    Shrub placement

Before planting Daurian rhododendron with subsequent care in the open field, you should choose a suitable place. Landing recommendations:

    • Plants in natural conditions form undergrowth, so it is better to choose a place on the slope, to protect the bushes from strong drafts. Young plantings are located in a semi-shaded place, but not in full shade, let the sun's rays fall on the bushes in the morning or evening.
    • Landing on heavy loams, stagnation of rain and melt water is strictly prohibited. Under such conditions, the roots of the rhododendron rot, so that the depth of the aquifer is no closer than a meter to the surface.
    • Planting plan for spring. Dig a hole filled with prepared soil from compost, pine needles, humus, peat and sand. At the bottom provide drainage to prevent rotting of the roots. You can not liming the soil, in an alkaline environment, the plant refuses to grow.
    • Since rhododendron has surface roots, planting plants with roots that grow in depth are planned nearby. Bushes will get along among pine, oak, pear and apple trees. Neighborhood with chestnuts, maples or lindens, which absorb nutrients from the soil, will be detrimental.

If you ignore the requirements for planting, the sprout of rhododendron will stall in growth, and eventually even die. To protect the bushes from the roots of neighboring plants, it is recommended even at the stage of preparation of the planting pit, to overlay its side walls with a layer of slate or covering material.

    Plot decoration

Designers use both single and group stands of rhododendrons to compose complete compositions. Beautiful flowering plant looks favorably against the background of conifers, in curb plantings, near the entrance to the site.

    Rhododendron in site design

Evergreen shrubs are planted near the rhododendrons from the south and west to protect plants from drafts, and from sunburn in spring. To ensure the bushes of partial shade, you can have them between tall trees that grow in the west side of the buildings.

You can not plant rhododendrons in a southerly direction. Here they are exposed to burns, the flowers become small, and the leaf blades wither, change color.

For group plantings, plants are picked up in height, that is, in the center of the site, the highest bush is planted, which is planted around the perimeter with a smaller size. You can not combine evergreen and deciduous plants, so the site in winter will get untidy appearance. Also select varieties with a variety of colors for coloring so that they are in harmony with each other. They make up plantings from pinkish-purple flowers, set off with bushes with white inflorescences. Plants with apricot hats stand out against the background of lemon bell flowers.

An adult plant is suitable for solitary plantations so that it reaches a height of at least 2 meters, because the small plant will be lost among the surrounding greenery.

    Selection of winter hardy varieties

There is a widespread opinion among gardeners that rhododendrons do not survive the local winters.

    Rhododendron Hybrid

Many hybrid varieties with increased resistance to low temperatures, but with an extensive color gamut of colors. For decorating the site choose hybrids, proven among fans of heather plants:

    • Rhododendron hybrid "Nova Zembla" - decorate the garden with hats of wine-red flowers.
    • "The Hague" - suitable for curbing landings, blooms in bulk pinkish small flowers.
    • "Album Novum" - forms a wide bush of a rounded shape, throws delicate buds of a pink shade.
    • "Helsinki University" - the most frost-resistant variety, does not freeze even at -40 degrees.
    • "Daughter Pohzhdoly" - a low bush with flowers of wine color.
    • "Kraktakus" - medium-sized bushes, blooming in spring with terry skirts of rich burgundy color.
    • "Grandiflorum" - grows in small gardens, forms a dense bush with flowers of lilac color.
    • "Elite" - will grow a spreading bush, can withstand temperatures down to -30 degrees.

Breeders display varieties with several shades of color in the corolla. Now popular rhododendron flowers with a dark throat, sprinkled with contrasting spots. Emit a light aroma of inflorescences with white or pale pink flowers. It affects the shape of blooming flowers - from tubular, stellate to corrugated and lobed. Small flowers are collected in umbrellas, consisting of several dozen pieces.

How to recognize a healthy sapling

You can not buy rhizomes of unknown origin in spontaneous markets, it is best to contact the garden center or nursery. Consultants will talk in detail about the benefits of a species plant, planting methods, and demanding care.

    Rhododendron Saplings

Let the sophisticated gardeners choose the new items of the collection, they recommend beginners to get acquainted with the Daurian rhododendron. The plant quickly adapts to the growing conditions, withstands severe frosts, produces strong shoots. For planting fit 2-year-old seedling, which has already acclimatized to the conditions of the middle zone. Before buying it is worth asking how the sapling is obtained. Seedlings grow to 15 cm by the age of 3, and cuttings are a little higher - about 25 cm, have a developed root system, branching begins directly from the root collar.

A healthy seedling should have straight sprouts, without seals, nodules on the bark. Viable roots are not covered with mold, without putrid areas. If you make a scratch on the bark should seem healthy wood, if it is dry - refuse to buy.

    Landing rules

If the plant is planted according to all the rules, it will grow into a wide shrub with healthy leathery leaves. After selecting a semi-dark area with slightly acidic soil, proceed to planting:

    • dig a hole, the width and depth of which is not less than half a meter
    • pebbles or crushed bricks are poured as drainage
    • fill the hole with soil prepared on the basis of peat-sand mixture with sand, sprinkled needles are poured
    • root neck should rise slightly above ground level
    • make a hole near the trunk for ease of watering and dressing
    • roots grow in the humus layer, so they produce mulching with peat - the mulch will save
    • roots from winter frosting, will not allow moisture to evaporate, prevents the growth of weeds

Loosening is carried out after watering, without digging deluge deep into the ground. Flowering should be expected in the fourth year after planting, if all recommendations for planting are followed.

    Easy care of rhododendron

Caring for naughty plants involves controlling pests, ensuring irrigation, forming pruning. When loosening try not to hurt the roots of the bush, so as not to provoke its death. Mulch prevents the germination of weed seeds, provides comfortable conditions for building a strong root system. Weed sprouts are selected only by hand, in order not to damage the roots of rhododendron with a garden tool.

    Regular watering

In hot summer, you should pour a bucket of acidified water under each bush three times during the week. Plants are responsive to spraying, so they carry out this procedure as often as possible.

    Watering Rhododendron

A signal of moisture deficiency is indicated by drooping leaf blades covering the edges with brownish spots. For irrigation, rainwater is used, in which peat is settled for a day for acidification.

It is enough to fertilize adult bushes once every three years. It is necessary to prikopat spring near the compost bucket. Mineral fertilizers are applied in the spring, as well as after flowering, but can not be fed at the end of summer. Rhododendrons are preparing for a period of tranquility, and extra fertilizing stimulates the vegetation of the plant, which as a result will go into winter with underexposed wood, which will lead to frosting of annual shoots.

    Forming a plant

In the period of growth can not be pruned young bushes. Rhododendrons are considered long-lived, and therefore do not differ by rapid growth. To grow a powerful plant, you should remove the buds from young bushes. Allowed to fully bloom rhododendron only for 4 years after planting in open ground.

    Preparing for the winter

The pledge of a successful wintering will serve as an autumn wet-load irrigation. In the conditions of rainy autumn this condition is observed, but if dry weather keeps, take care of spillage. A thick layer of sawdust or peat is laid near the Dahurian rhododendron, which is pressed to the ground with boards or slate. Young evergreens are covered with fir paws, curb varieties are covered with dry leaves, and around the high varieties they make a frame, which is covered with shingles. Branches of deciduous shrubs pressed to the ground, so that in winter they disappeared under the snow.

Rhododendrons are opened with the establishment of warm weather, approximately in April. The procedure is carried out in cloudy weather, to prevent the likelihood of burns on weakened plants.

There are two ways of plant reproduction - by seed or vegetatively (cuttings and layering). Seed propagation is suitable for wild varieties, and cultivated varieties are bred vegetatively.

Dahurian rhododendron is one of the most beautiful plants for the garden, it is also called the "rose tree" because of its abundant blooming with delicate flowers. Even before the foliage blooming, the bushes are covered with buds, decorating a garden that has woken up after winter silence. From the rhododendron form spectacular hedges that do not “fall out” in the frosty season, are undemanding in care, saturate the air with oxygen.

    Preparing a landing site

Young saplings of Dahurian rhododendron require care. Without preparation, plant a shrub is impossible. Rhododendron does not like sunny open spaces, it is desirable to plant it on the north side of various buildings. Another option is to plant a bush next to coniferous trees.

Pines and firs will cover it from direct sunlight and protect it from the wind. The best soil composition for planting young shoots is leafy soil mixed with peat and coniferous litter (if necessary, you can add complex fertilizers).

In the spring we proceed to the preparation of the landing hole. A hole is dug with dimensions of 70 * 70 cm and a depth of 50 cm. At the bottom of the well, drainage should be arranged.

For these purposes are used: sand, crushed stone, fragments of brick or stones (the fraction should not exceed 15 cm).

A distance of at least 0.65 meters is maintained between the landing holes.

Important! Spreading drainage from stones and rubble, avoid calcareous rocks - they will kill the roots of the shrub.

The root system lies near the surface. Therefore, when planting it does not need to be deeply buried.A roller is poured around the perimeter of the hole, and the ground itself is filled up with a thick (6 cm) cover of the mulching elements.

    Plant care

Young shoots of all plants need care, and Dahuri rhododendron is no exception. Like any ornamental plant, it needs time to weed, water and feed. Soil must be fed with organic vitamins at least once every two years.

With the onset of spring, the ground near the bush is fed with complex vitamins based on nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium.

The second time, the soil is maintained by phosphorus-potassium granules - after the shrub has blossomed and the embryos of new flower buds are formed.

To feed young shoots, vitamins are dissolved in water, in which form they absorb them better.

Important! You can not use fertilizers based on chlorine or lime, for the shoots they are dangerous.

    About the benefits of water

Daurian rhododendron loves water. Provide him with regular and intensive irrigation and spraying. With a lack of moisture, the crown of the shrub acquires a matte shade, wilts, brown spots appear on the edges of the leaves.

The shrub is very picky in the choice of water and prefers rain or snow, does not like hard or lime.

Rhododendrons need to be watered at least twice (and preferably three) a week; a standard bucket is used for one adult plant. Water is preferably acidified with citric or oxalic acid.

The young shrub is irrigated a little differently: the volume of water decreases, but the frequency of watering increases.

After watering with caution loose soil. Do not forget that the root system of plants lies shallow, and with excessive zeal it can be damaged.

The first year of life for the bush - the most difficult. Therefore, he needs help. To do this, with a young bush at the first flowering pinch off the buds.

Next year, if you want to get good seeds, you will need to remove most of the buds again, leaving only their well-formed part.

With this approach, the bush for the third year will bloom much more abundantly.

    Preparing for the winter

Before wintering, the ground near the bush should be soaked with water. However, dry autumn in our latitudes is a rarity.

The rains themselves will perfectly moisturize not only the land near the Dahurian rhododendron, but in general everything around.

In addition to watering, preparing plants for the cold season includes the following actions:

    • The soil under the bush is covered with a layer of sawdust, peat or humus. A layer of mulching materials with a thickness of 15-20 cm is pressed by improvised means (slate sheets, boards, etc.).
    • The crown of the rhododendron before wintering is tied. This will protect it from snowfall.
    • In regions with particularly difficult climatic conditions, houses are made of plastic or wood for bushes.

Shelter is removed when the temperature rises above -100. When preparing a shrub for wintering in the fall, they are also guided by this temperature, because a prematurely protected plant can snuff.

In spring, the shelter is removed from the shrub in April, the rays of the sun at this time are not able to harm young foliage, but the root system already removes moisture from the soil. To open the rhododendron cloudy weather is chosen.

    Medical applications

Daurian rhododendron brings practical benefits. It is used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Preparations based on this plant affect the human body as follows:

    • strengthen the contractions of the heart muscles
    • act as a pressure reducing agent
    • promote intensive blood circulation

The solution, infused on the leaves of rhododendron, is used in the treatment of rheumatism. The crown of the shrub contains vitamin C (44%), the maximum concentration is reached in the summer (July-August).

Traditional medicine has long appreciated all the advantages of this plant. Daur rhododendron is a kind of first-aid kit, it contains:

    • active elements that inhibit the growth of microorganisms (phytoncides),
    • vitamin c

This is not a complete list of useful qualities of the plant. The shrub is used not only for decorative and medical purposes. It has found its use in light industry, in perfumery.

This is curious! The name “rhododendron” is a combination of the Greek “rhodon” - a rose and “dendron” - a tree. Daurian rhododendron was reclaimed in the 17th century, and the British were the first. In the gardens of the Russian Empire, shrubs appeared only in the XIX century.

Rhododendron is able to act to decorate the garden, not only as a soloist, it will look great in a group composition. "Pink" tree is used by gardeners as a hedge or decorates borders.

Daur rhododendron is a wonderful ornamental plants for the garden, not afraid of low temperatures. After a long and snowy winter, he will be the first to delight you with the pink haze of his flowers.
